Dan Tenev (born 1958 in Merichlery, Bulgaria). In 1987 he graduated from the National Academy of Arts in Sofia with a degree in Graphic Arts. Since 1983 he has participated in organized artistic life in Bulgaria, and in 1988 he had his first solo exhibition. Between 1990 and 1994 he travelled to Brazil, Germany, France and the Netherlands. He has participated in numerous exhibitions and graphical forums in and outside Europe. Since the 1990s his practice has shifted towards sculpture, artistic actions and installations. Dan Tenev's work belongs to the traditions of land art and site-specific art, while other works refer to performance, actionism and conceptual art. The conceptual foundations of his practice are communicative to notions such as being, knowledge, order, sovereignty, volition and danger. Individual works and artistic series are associated with the philosophy of Martin Heidegger and critical texts by Peter Sloterdijk, Jürgen Habermas, and others. His artistic projects are expanding on grand scales. Highlights include large series of works that function with numbers, soil, air and electricity. As states, elements or mediators, they solve various technical cases and constitute stages of long-term artistic processes. Part of his work are drawings, sketches and photographic manipulations, satellite photos - representing realised or unrealised large-scale intentions. Dan Tenev participated in the very first contemporary art festivals in Bulgaria - Process-Space (1993, 1994) and Sofia Underground (1997). He also initiated, organized (in a collective) and participated in several editions of the contemporary art festival in Dimitrovgrad - "In its own context" (1996). In various periods he has collaborated with the curators Ruen Ruenov, Dimitar Grozdanov, Boris Klimentiev, Galina Lardeva, Penka Mincheva, Yovo Panchev, Nadezhda Dzhakova, Irina Batkova and Atanas Totlyakov. In the period 2000-2013 Dan Tenev developed his projects in collaboration with Ani Mavrova. Together they also realized a number of art actions, installations and performances. Dan Tenev has received awards (Iron Order, 2015), prizes and special mentions by the Ministry of Culture and the Union of Bulgarian Artists ("Born Independent" show, 2009), and nominations for New Bulgarian Art (2007-2011). His works are part of the contemporary art collections at the Art Galleries in Sofia, Dimitrovgrad and Dobrich; part of the art collections of Process-Space and Sofia Underground festivals, the Duppini Art Group collection, and numerous private art collections.

Dan Tenev is sculpturing the Earth's surface. His land art pieces are designed in scale for specific natural terrains and can be seen from the ground, plane, or satellite. Other art installations are monumentally elevated in the urban landscape and rival architectural volume. A number of art items - preparatory sketches, situational drawings and maquettes, photographic materials - are integral steps in the process of realisation. Such an artistic process is often planned on a project principle: they develop over time and envisage activities in collaboration with various specialists - from construction technicians and heavy machinery operators, to consultations with geologists, surveyors, and legal advisors. Dan Tenev's artworks have the character of landscape engineering, and as a land art realization in Bulgaria - this is yet an unpaved path. The specifics of Dan Tenev's large-scale artworks include the definition of land art as an "immovable work of art" with undetermined artistic copyright in Bulgaria, the land in a state of aesthetic medium, and the ownership issues. Artistic realization in this case is a process of correlation with a range of municipal or state institutions, corporations or private individuals. Under these circumstances, Dan Tenev initiates, organises and finances his earthworks on his own. Numerical Rows (2010) is just such an artistic project, carried out over three years in his hometown of Merichlery - elements of which are still visible today. Land Art Polygon (2011), Bitten (2011- ), and Chopping Off the Top (2013) are comparable examples realised for aesthetic purposes and existing for different periods. These and other artworks and artistic conceptual projects within the landscape, both realized and unrealized, have the potential to develop successful business models such as travel and tourism tours, cultural programs, aerial tourism, and more. (GEO-LINES 2021) Art collecting (art objects and project proposals) represents the artwork socialization as a cultural asset and value being circulated either for public or private benefits. Selected artistic conceptual designs, models, drawings of different sizes and techniques, sketches, collages, and editioned photographs are available for purchase.
